First Tailwhip

April 30th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in BMX, Personal

I remember seeing the photo sequence in BMX Action of Mike Dominguez doing an Alley-Opp-Tailwhip-360 thingy. Most people thought it was some sort of accident or a “wish” trick that he never planned on trying to pull but wanted to show the move off. Whatever the case is it was interesting years and years later when Joe Johnson started flinging his back end around nobody seemed to remember this awesome display of bike control.

Here’s the video. You’ll see the tailwhip around the 5:35 mark. If you take the time and watch how much control Mike had in that concrete structure from hell named the “Combi” pool. Most riders had to stick to footplants and rollouts but not “King” Mike.

Man, that canyon jump was awesome…

Old School Golf

April 29th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in BMX, Golf, Personal

golfolympicclubmini.jpgWell being the genius that I am I’ve decided that I will be holding a Old School BMX Golf Get-Together this year. The plan is to get a bunch of guys together and Golf then get together in the clubhouse to watch some Old School Videos, hand out some prizes and have a few cocktails.

Why Golf? It’s something a lot of guys I know do and it’s a good excuse to drink some beer and watch some videos with friends. I’m no real golfer and like I said, it’s a good excuse to hang out and tell old stories.

If your interested drop me a line or post a comment. Any suggestions of where a good place to golf that has a private area for us to trash hang? I will be keeping track of everyone interested and once more info becomes available I will be posting it here. Come join us!! You don’t even have to Golf. Just come for the fun! E-mail me: krt at krtschmidt.com

2-Hip

I don’t think I’ve ever met a rider who didn’t like Ron Wilkerson. Actually, let me be clear… I’ve never met a rider who didn’t respect Ron Wilkerson. Have I met people who thought Ron was weird and goofy? Yes. Have I met people that think that the man who pushed freestyle in a new direction is a little punchy? Oh yeah. All these people would also go on to say how Ron Wilkerson made it cool to be freestyler. With his Spicoli accent, ripped jeans, leather jackets and Flock Of Seagulls hairdo Ron Wilkerson brought a rockstar attitude to a freestyle world dying for some credibility. Every picture you saw of Ron in a magazine he was always smiling or looking into the camera as if almost to say “Hey Bud! Let’s party!!” And we wanted to. We drove hours to see him in person. We ate undercooked hot dogs in the hot sun to watch him do a Smoothie or a Pedal-Picker Drop-in. We pestered our parents to buy the posters and t-shirts and wait for hours so he could sign them for us. For me, and many of you, when you met Ron he was every bit the rockstar you thought he was. He never let us down. Ron lived the lifestyle we dreamed of having if we ever made it as a pro rider. He didn’t flaunt it. He enjoyed it and we wanted him to. Thanks for the memories Ron.

I could write for hours about my favorite riders but I won’t. At least not today… So with all that said here is a great video produced by Ron’s company 2-Hip Bikes in 1988. So much happened in 1988. It was a great year for Freestyle and should be remembered.

This is the first of 8 videos.

“You can always tell a real friend:

…when you’ve made a fool of yourself he doesn’t feel you’ve done a permanent job.Laurence J. Peter

One of the greatest things about having this Blog is the connections I have been able to re-establish with old friends. Imagine my surprise when one of the oldest comes knocking at my YouTube channel… Dale Matson. Winner of the first King Of Vert Amateur competition. He’s only got a couple of videos up right now but check it out. Does this guy ever age?

In commemoration of Mr. Matson I’ll be posting some videos of him from back-in-the-day real soon. But for now enjoy this video Dale posted of himself…
