Haro Team 1984

May 21st, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in BMX, Personal

So in 1984 I was fourteen years old. I had just ended my BMX racing career with a total of 4 novice races under my belt. I was lucky enough to hear that the Haro team was coming to Erik’s Bike Shop to do a show. According to the flyer, Bob Haro and Ron Wilton where coming to show their stuff. I stomped into my fathers office and explained to him that my life would never be complete without seeing this event. He agreed and off we went. When we got there I saw him. The Father of Freestyle. Walking around and checking the sound equipment. I turned to my friend and commented about how he was wearing jeans and not the required leathers of a true Freestyle professional. When the show began Rich Sigur and Ron Wilton came out blazing. Bob explained to the crowd that he had suffered a knee injury and would not be riding. I was disappointed not to see the man who started it all ride but the show was mind blowing. I studied each move and locked it into my brain.

Years later I found out a lot about the history that lead up to that day. Bob Haro had changed his name from Horowitz to Haro since it fit better on his number plates his was cooking in his moms oven. I always had a chuckle thinking about how Horowitz would look on the down tube of my neon blue Sport. There also was a credible rumor that he had exaggerated his knee injury due to the fact that since he was so involved with the business of running Haro Bikes. His skills had fallen on hard times and was no longer able to keep up with the new crowd of riders on the scene. I understand. Better to go out on top than to fade away.

So in remembrance of that day I present to you… The Haro Team in 1984 at Erik’s Bike Shop in Richfield, Minnesota. Long before Erik was known as “The Bike Man” he knew how to get street cred. Have the greatest teams come to your parking lot and watch as fourteen year olds talk their fathers into buying as much Haro gear as Bob could sign.
